For most of the last year I’ve been working two jobs. This has involved getting up at 3:30 in the morning and getting home at 8 pm at night. I say this so that there is some context to what comes next: I recently was given the opportunity to go to Tokyo for a very short stay. It was an opportunity that I couldn’t pass up.
In doing so I became a disappointment to some, a crazy foreigner to at least two local Japanese, simply “crazy” to yet others and as far as I’m concerned a philosophical 1st world wanderer and rockstar.
My coworkers were headed out to lunch and invited me along once more. They were headed to the Juke box they explained. Having not heard about the place before I followed up with a few additional questions such as what type of food they served and what they were primarily known for. With a name like the jukebox I assumed it served typical diner food such as club sandwiches, salads and burgers. To my surprise the guys kept expressing how good their burgers were and I was easily convinced to join them.

I started work in a new part of town a few months ago. A few weeks into the new job one of our interns was approaching the end of his time with us. We planned to go out for lunch together to celebrate and wish him good luck. The location of the meal was left for him to decide and he chose “Five guys” on Boulevard Des Sources here in Montreal. As some of you who have visited this blog may know, I’ve taken to documenting various burger encounters throughout my travels and in this beautiful city of ours. This was going to be a my first visit to Five guys. I was pretty excited about simply trying a new burger place with friends. They had assured me that the burger was reasonable. Nothing amazing yet not bad either.

I spent a nice sunny Saturday playing tennis in the early afternoon followed by some frisbee. We played for a few hours until our mutual friend Schwin arrived. He had just purchased a new skate board and wanted to get used to it’s ride.
We left the tennis courts, grabbed ourselves a couple of pints from the dépanneur and headed over to one of the neighborhood parks. We spent the rest of the afternoon relaxing in the park, throwing the frisbee and enjoying a few drinks.
Eventually Schwin made mention of a new restaurant he wanted to try near the Atwater market. It wasn’t quite supper time yet so we decided to slowly make our way to the market on foot. Once there we walked up to the Satay brothers counter and got ready to order.
I was somewhat familiar with the food on the menu so I took over the ordering responsibilities. Continue reading
