A few months ago (sometime in November If I’m not mistaken) I was walking home along my usual route when I saw one of the Satay Brothers crew. I didn’t think anything of it because we live in the same neighborhood. It wasn’t the first time I ran into one of the gang. The Satay brothers ran a little restaurant in St-Henri, which during the summer time would move to the Atwater market. I wrote about them a couple of years ago. I had walked by their St-Jacques restaurant location a few weeks earlier only to discover they were closed. I thought to myself maybe they were taking some time off between closing their Atwater location and opening their restaurant location.
A couple of days later I’m walking along the same road and I see a different Satay Brother owner walk out of a building that had it’s widows covered up. I froze in my tracks and exclaimed “Dude, please tell me you guys are opening here!”. He smiled and confirmed that they would indeed be opening their new location on Notre-Dame. We talked a little bit and he explained that they hoped to be open by mid December and we went our separate ways.
I crossed the street that day and grabbed this photo of the front of the soon to be Satay brothers restaurant:
Being close to my daily commute I would make a point of walking in front of the restaurant to keep track of it’s progress. Here was another indication that they were getting ready to open, the lantern appeared in the entrance a few days/week later.:
Earlier this week I visited their facebook page and saw that they would be opening the doors to the public on January 5th. I would have like to have gone in on their first day, but instead had to settled on stopping in on Tuesday.
Here’s a picture of the bar which greets you when entering the restaurant. The front of the restaurant facing the street and finally the rear of the restaurant which has a semi open kitchen area.
I used to visit the Satay Brothers Atwater market often enough that they recognize me when I stop by. I entered the restaurant and sat myself down at one of the larger tables. A few of the owners stopped by and we talked about their new restaurant and they invited me to walk around and have a look. I asked them why they hadn’t opened up mid December as they had hoped. He explained that they had been waiting on the city to connect their water service and it had been done just before the Christmas holidays. Rather than have everyone work over the holidays, they decided to push the opening to January.
They also explained that in the following months they would have projector setup so they could play the Habs hockey game or play various (Asian) movies . They also plan on being open rather late on certain days, which will most likely be Fridays and Saturdays.
Ordered my usual papaya salad and some steamed pork buns. Both were as delicious as I remembered them. Including a beer I think the total ran me somewhere around 25$.
The new Satay Brothers restaurant can be found at 3721 Notre-Dame. Don’t hesitate to give them a try you won’t be disappointed!
