There’s a sign in a window I walk by daily. It’s a medium size white rectangular sign with bold red letters: “Keep It weird Montreal“. I couldn’t tell you if it has just been placed in the window or if it’s been there for a long time. I first noticed it on a nice sunny spring afternoon. As soon as I read it, a large grin appeared on my face. It soothed and lifted my spirits at the same time. Just something about keeping things weird which appeals to me.
I haven’t posted in several months (over half a year!). One of the major reasons I wasn’t able to post new articles was because I no longer had internet at home. This meant If I wanted to update the site I had to either use a friends internet connection or use publicly accessible wireless internet connections.
In geek talk, I didn’t want to be connecting to my site and sending my password in the clear. This meant either setting up a ssl certificate for the site, using ssh or finally using the internet at friends place. It certainly would of been possible to update the site via ssh, but it involved a lot of hours I wasn’t prepared to put in. An ssl certificate was out of the budget at the time as I had other priorities. A friends place was too inconvenient in the sense I would of ended up socializing and not working on new post.
Over the months I realized how much I enjoyed having a little anonymous home on the net. With only a few days to spare before my domain and hosting expired I decided to not only renew both but also purchased a ssl certificate. This allows me to connect from wireless access points a little more securely and improves your privacy. This means I’ll now be able to post new articles with more frequency.
For those who might not be familiar with ssl. The ssl certificate means that you can now use https://dokk-aebi.com to connect to this site. To make a long explanation short; it’s safer to use https if you’re concerned about privacy.
With that I’ve covered my first new post in several months. A little site news, a little bit of Montreal and of course a little bit of art!
Keep it weird Montreal,
