Finding the Big Rock brewery in Gangnam Seoul.

Updated March 18th, 2013: Mike mentioned in the comments below that the current instructions were no longer valid.  As I’m no longer in Seoul it’s hard for me to confirm this.  However using google maps it appears like perhaps the station exit simply changed numbers.  So rather than taking exit #8, take exit #12 and I believe the directions will then be correct.  A big thanks to Mike for taking the time to comment!

As I previously mentioned in a post about a wild night at the Big Rock brewery here the place can be a little difficult to find if you’ve never been there.  I’ve included directions below in the hopes that it’ll help some of the individuals trying to locate this place!

Take the green line to the Gangnam stop.  When you get off the train look for the signs indicating exit #8 exit#12 and use it to head above ground.

Once you’re outside keep walking straight until you see a small street/alley to your left.  If the store hasn’t relocated there should be a GS 25 directly in front of you.  It’ll be the first alley you will see after coming out of the metro station.

Turn left into the alley and walk straight for approximately 2-3 minutes.  Count the alleys on the right side: You will past two of them and both should be have large inclines (hills).  Once you arrive at the third alley turn left and keep walking.

The big Rock brewery will be approximately 15-30 seconds walk down this alley on your right hand side.  If you reach the end of the alley and you haven’t seen the brewery you’ve missed it!  (Turn around and walk up the small hill, the brewery will be on the left)

A quick note regarding the “count the alleys” remark above: if you count the alleys on your right side it will be the third alley, if you count the alleys on your left side it will be the second alley.  There’s a street that doesn’t exist on the left hand side but does on the right, as you can see from the map below.

I hope this was helpful to some of you!

I know the owner of big rock in Alberta and offered to visit while here. Thanks to your directions, I’ll be able to. He quite enjoys knowing that the pub is here and says the owners are quite nice but as you pointed out, suffer a bit from high tax and currency fluctuations.
I look forward to visiting and hopefully remeberimg to return here with a ffollow up comment. Btw this is being sent from my iPhone so please pardon typos. Goo free wifi here

      Hey John,

Glad you found the directions useful. I never got around to visiting the place a second time while I was in Seoul. That being said enjoying some nice Big Rock beers while there was a real treat.

I’ve read on a few other sites that the food is sometimes hit and miss. Hopefully you’ll stop by the site and give us your thoughts on the visit.

      Regards,

Those directions don’t work! I spent half an hour wandering round trying to make sense of them and only found it thanks to a helpful local who took me there. If you come out of Exit 8 and walk straight you’re heading along the main road. Having found it eventually, from Exit 8 you’d need to cross the main road then walk straight on (at right angles to the the main road). But actually you’d be better off coming out of an exit on the other side of the road.

      Hi Mike,
Thanks for taking the time to point this out. I was looking at the map using google maps and it looks like maybe they’ve changed the exit numbers.

I’ve had people send feedback in the past saying the instructions were helpful in finding the place. I’ll update the blog post to indicate that exit #12 is the one which should be used.
